it’s a “water printer“💧
Kalkulator V.1 (2022) is a self-built water printer that places water droplets onto a heated bed. The water is sourced directly from the tap of the artist’s household or a nearby natural water source. Due to the high mineral content in some waters, such as calcium(kalk) and magnesium, a white powdery residue marks where water was once present as it evaporates. It is an artistic tool created for research.
Based on the same principles of a 3D printer, the Kalkulator is a computerised numerically controlled(CNC) machine. Its precise characteristic is distinguishable from water’s unpredictable, chaotic nature, provoking a narration between the controlled and uncontrollable.
Over time, the Kalkulator will print out the results from different water sources: the beloved lakes of Austria. The Austrian government produces extensive water quality testing results from various lakes each year. Each lake water is special, containing minerals, countless microorganisms, and other organic materials. The research aims to produce a series of prints that represent the natural source, unique to their own.
